Microphones for iOS Devices (iPhones) and Android Devices
Whether you're looking for microphones for iOS devices or Android devices, you need to know the different variations available in order to choose the best one for your needs. Built-in mics of smartphones are unfortunately inefficient for serious recording tasks such as video blogging, social media posting, and interviewing. External phone microphones allow you to capture sound more accurately for professional audio recordings.
Connection Variations for Smartphone Microphones
Most microphones for Android devices have the standard 3.5mm jack that is compatible with almost all smartphones. This 3.5mm jack type is also used with wired headphones. Other wired mic models have USB connections that you can use with both iOS and Android phones. Wired microphones for iPhones use iOS/iPad MIDI interfaces and Apple Lightning connectors. You can also use these to connect the mics to other Apple products, such as iPads, iPods, and even iOS mixers. Wireless microphones for smartphone models use the latest Bluetooth technology for crisp, clear recording. Most Bluetooth microphones for iPhones and Androids also come with jack or USB connections.
Smartphone Microphone Types
Essentially, phone mics are professional-quality microphones rewired to work with smartphone software and hardware. Lavalier mics have clip-on features to allow for hands-free operation. They're perfect for hosting segments, interviews, and many other similar applications. Stereo and shotgun mics have stands and mounts for iOS devices that allow you to capture sound that's in close range. There are also the traditional handheld condenser microphones that have sufficient polar pattern to clearly pick up a single speaking/singing voice. You may also want to consider shopping for directional mics for live broadcasting purposes. These mics capture sound from all directions equally, while eliminating any kind of noise.
B&H Photo and Video stocks a wide selection of microphones for Android phones and iOS devices. Choose from a range of brands including Audio-Technica, Galaxy Audio, Rode, Senal, and Polsen.
