Rode VideoMic Pro overview

  • 1Description

The Rode VideoMic Pro with Lyre Shockmount & Dead-Cat Windshield Kit from B&H is a lightweight solution for capturing audio in windy environments that is designed for use with camcorders, DSLR cameras, and portable audio recorders. It can be used for several applications such as interviews, weddings, and more.

The B&H kit includes the Rode VideoMic Pro true shotgun microphone, a Rycote Lyre shockmount, an integrated foam windscreen, a hardwired 1/8" stereo mini-jack output (dual mono), and a camera shoe mount with 3/8" thread for easy boom pole mounting. At the same time, a furry wind cover for the VideoMic Pro is included and is designed to minimize wind noise while remaining acoustically transparent.

  • Rode VideoMic Pro with Rycote Lyre Shockmount

The VideoMic Pro with Rycote Lyre Shockmount from Rode is a supercardioid condenser shotgun microphone that terminates in a 1/8" stereo mini-jack (dual mono), includes an integrated shockmount, and an integrated foam windscreen. It can be used to capture audio for camcorders, DSLR, and portable recorders as a source of primary and reference audio.

The VideoMic Pro has been upgraded from earlier models with a 1/2" condenser capsule that provides broadcast-quality audio. Its 1/8" stereo mini-jack connector (outputting the mono signal to both left and right channels) delivers low self-noise of just 14 dB. A supercardioid polar pattern ensures that surrounding audio is minimized, and your recording is focused on the subject in front of the camera.

In addition, the Rycote Lyre-based shockmount is built from a single piece of hard-wearing thermoplastic. It separates the VideoMic Pro capsule and electronics from its mount, providing isolation from external physical factors that may cause unwanted rumble and vibrations in the microphone. This suspension will never wear out, sag or snap.

Easily accessible on the rear face of the microphone are the power, the filter, the level controls and a selectable high-pass filter at 80 Hz. The filter will prevent low-end noise such as air conditioners and traffic from being recorded. Furthermore, the -10 dB (or pad) is suitable when recording loud sound sources such as live music, motorsports, or interviews, where the subject is very close to the camera. There is a +20 dB level boost designed for use with DSLR cameras, so the user can reduce the camera's preamp level, effectively reducing the amount of noise generated by the camera's audio circuitry.

The Rode VideoMic Pro uses a standard sized shoe-mount for on-camera use and features a 3/8" thread in the base of the mount for easy boom-pole mounting. The VideoMic Pro is battery powered and provides over 70-hours recording from a single 9V battery.

Camera shoe mount with 3/8" thread for easy boom-pole mounting

  • Rode DeadCat VMPR Artificial Fur Wind Shield

The DeadCat VMPR Artificial Fur Wind Shield from Rode is a furry wind-cover for the VideoMic Pro with the Lyre Shock-mount (sold separately). The artificial fur minimizes wind-noise in windy environments while remaining acoustically transparent. Not compatible with VideoMic Pro with band suspension.

Rode VideoMic Pro reviews

VideoMic Pro with Lyre Suspension Mount & Dead-Cat Windshield Kit is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Audio with Ease of Use I use this mic primarily inside a make shift studio room. I could have purchased a lapel mic for the style of videos that I make, but I don't like how they look on camera and find that people who aren't used to being on camera are made more uncomfortable by a lapel mic. So I went with this shotgun and I use a boom to get the mic as close to the subject as I can. This makes it easier to get people in and out of the shot and also creates a more natural sound because it picks up a bit of background noise. I also love the boost on the gain as it lessens the load from the camera's preamp and sounds much cleaner as a result.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love This Mic!!! I bought this mic to upgrade my old Video Mic and I have been very pleased. While it is not a professional xlr microphone, it still holds its own when it comes to audio quality. When used properly it produces fantastic sound. It mounts easily and simply to your camera or rig, and it is not obtrusive. I would recommend this mic to beginners and professionals alike, because it is that good. It has become a part of my standard kit, and I love the results that I can get from it. Pros: +20 dB is a huge blessing and greatly improves the sound quality over the old version. The shock mount is much improved over the old model. Cons: NA

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good mic for the money, maybe the best. I use this mic on a Sony RX10 m3, primarily for wildlife filmmaking. I would give it 4.5 stars but that is not an option. The audio quality is as good as you can get in this class of microphones. I took off a half star because the side rejection isn't as good as I hoped. Now, if I can just remember to turn the mic on when I'm shooting! I've been using XLR phantom powered mics and keep forgetting LOL. So far, the 0db setting has provided adequate levels but it's nice to know that you have a 20db boost for really quiet environments without relying on the camera's amp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Mic This microphone is wonderful for run and gun shooting. I really like the +20db option on the mic. It helps me get nice clean recordings. The Dead-Cat windshield is quite good at cutting wind noise down to something that can easily be removed in post.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent On Board mic for DSLR Using for my Sony A7r ii and It fits well and doesn't get in the way of any camera controls. Sound is excellent for an on board mic. Easy to adjust levels. Good battery life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big audio improvement from the first generation VideoMic Pro Big audio improvement from the first generation VideoMic Pro! The Lyre suspension works really well much improved over the rubber bands. The dead cat is too long for the mic by 2 so I scrunched it together now it's only 1 too long. Overall the unit is much bigger the original VideoMic Pro. Have to say I'm really impressed with audio quality it sounds really good going directly into my Sony A7R II.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, glad I got it! This thing is powerful! I had to play around with it to get the correct sound but once I got it it has been smooth sailing. I definitely Recomend getting this one above all other ones that cost less of the rode family. Whats good is that it plugs directly into the camera and there is no need for external sound recording. But I do recomend doing both if you can.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Extremely disappointed!! I was very excited to get the VideoMic Pro mic, especially after reading all the great reviews from pros. However, when I got it, I was immediately frustrated by how hard it was to get the battery in that stupid battery cage that Rode engineers really were out to lunch on. In fact, I had to look up a YouTube presentation to see how to install a simple 9 volt battery. The presenter had over 8,000 hits, making me feel good I wasn't the only dummy in the world. Even after I learned how to install the battery, I realized it was going to be a problem, especially if I were on a job and had to quickly exchange batteries. But I took it out on one all day job and the mic worked beautifully. However, that night, getting ready for another video job, I could not get the mic to turn on again. Ouch. I even tried a new battery, but no workee. So today I am returning this potentially great mic. I was going to buy a Sennheiser tube shotgun type mic, but after talking to a B&H knowledgeable salesman, tilted towards another Rode mic, a NTG2, simply because of the differences in factory warrantees, since otherwise they are very similar, equal mics, according to the video sales expert at B&H. Hope this is helpful to the next videographer out there!
