Using Focus and Zoom Controls in Photography

While simple focus rings and zoom buttons might work for casual videographers, professional projects demand extremely advanced focus and zoom controls. These controls are additional devices and components that allow users to manipulate focus and zoom in a variety of ways. Focus and zoom remote controls enable you to make adjustments without directly touching the camera, which is often a requirement of high-level productions.

Upgrading with Focus and Zoom Collar Bands

If you're looking for a quick upgrade for your focus and zoom functionality, consider focus and zoom collar bands. These are simple additions to pre-existing zoom and focus rings on your camera, and they help you make smoother and more precise adjustments. This is a great option for casual photographers and videographers.

Types of Zoom Controls

You can control zoom functions with a variety of different tools. The simplest methods involve zoom rings or buttons. For more advanced control, master grips mount directly on the camera, giving the camera operator a wide variety of control options on the fly. In certain situations, zoom remote controls might be necessary. These are entirely separate from the camera, and they allow users to control zoom functions remotely with monitors and specialized buttons and throttles.

Types of Focus Controls

Adjusting focus is also possible with a wide range of options. For a significant upgrade over simple focus rings, consider professional video follow focus systems. These advanced systems feature focus wheels and other additional components for smooth and precise adjustments. There are also remote controls for focus, and these sometimes offer zoom functionality.

Why Use Focus and Zoom Remote Controls?

Focus and zoom remote controls are often used during dolly shots, crane shots, and other potentially tricky situations. Remote controls feature throttle controllers and rocker switches that allow the user to make smooth and precise adjustments to both focus and zoom. For complicated shots, some remote controls allow two users to control the focus and zoom separately.
