  • Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Nikon F

A versatile zoom for everyday shooting, the Nikon F-mount 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Lens from Sigma covers a useful wide-angle to portrait-length range of focal lengths to suit shooting in a variety of environments. As part of the esteemed Art series of lenses, a sophisticated optical design is used that incorporates three SLD elements and four aspherical elements to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, as well as color fringing, distortions, and other anomalies for greater clarity and sharpness. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to suppress lens flare and ghosting for accurate color fidelity and high contrast, and a protective coating has been applied to the front element, too, to benefit working in harsh climates. Additionally, extending its versatility, a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range as well as greater control over depth of field.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic Motor to produce quick, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. An Optical Stabilizer also benefits handheld shooting by minimizing the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery. The physical design utilizes Thermally Stable Composite material for durability in a wide range of environments, and a brass bayonet mount also offers rigidity and mounting precision.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Standard zoom lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however it can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements and four aspherical elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy, as well as spherical aberrations for reduced distortion and improved sharpness throughout the zoom range.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Front lens element has been treated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to benefit working in harsh environmental conditions.
Nine-blade rounded diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

  • B+W 82mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter

The B+W 82mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

Kaesemann High Transmission Circular (HTC) polarizing filters are fitted with polarizing foils which provide 99.5% light transmission that are cemented between plano-parallel optical glass. The resulting sandwich is then precision-polished to achieve accurate plano-parallel surfaces. Finally, they are edge-sealed to protect the foil against humidity.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes multiple layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also offers further protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The Nano coating associated with XS-Pro filters provides an additional eighth layer over the MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features a thin brass filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting while enhancing durability and jamming prevention. To further reduce the possibility of vignetting when this filter is in use, the filter ring's outside diameter is slightly larger than the actual thread size. This may prevent the use of some lens manufacturer bayonet hoods.

  • B+W 82mm XS-Pro MRC-Nano 803 Solid Neutral Density 0.9 Filter (3-Stop)

The B+W 82mm XS-Pro MRC-Nano 803 Solid Neutral Density 0.9 Filter is an ND filter with an 8x filter factor that provides a 3-stop exposure reduction. Its 0.9 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes multiple layers of anti-reflection coating. Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 reviews

24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Nikon F is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A worthy alternative to the Nikon 24-70 2.8 This lens has exceeded my expectations in every way. Using it with 36MP Nikon D800 and it's my first non-Nikon lens, replacing my classic Nikkor 35-70 2.8, which was a super sharp lens, but lacked AF-S, ED, etc... this new Sigma was more appealing to me than Nikon's 24-70 2.8 because that lens is simply too large and heavy to be an all-around, general purpose shooter. The Sigma is extremely sharp, focuses silently and super-fast, very rugged/solid build quality. I do see some vignetting around the corners at f/2.8 but nothing major. And the bokeh looks great on my portrait-type shots so far. Two thumbs up. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth the investment for the image quality you get I'm a family/child/newborn portrait photographer and I just purchased this lens because I shoot primarily with fixed lenses but really needed a good zoom to keep up with fast little kids that seem to be getting faster as I get older. Well, I've been blown away by the sharpness of this lens! I haven't used it outdoors yet, plan to for a family session this weekend, but used it during a newborn shoot this weekend in my studio and I was blown away! I ended up using it the entire session!! The lens itself is pretty heavy and larger than most of my lenses but that's a small price to pay for the quality of the images I'm getting from this lens. I love love love it and will continue to sing it's praises! I think I even like it more than my Sigma 35mm Art lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SIGMA ART LENSES. JUST THE BEST ON TODAY'S LENS MARKET! Just received the new 24-70mm, Nikon mount. It's just first class in every way. Right out of the box focus is dead on on the D-750. This lens took forever to to be released,However the lens was worth the wait . This is the sixth Sigma Art lens that we have now and I love all of them. I have nothing but parse for the Sigma ART lenses. In my option, they are the new go to lenses on today's professional market. No long story's with this New lens. Just the right lens for the right time. If you are looking for perfection get the Sigma's ART lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp, nice color and fast AF This lens is very sharp and produce nice color. The AF is dead on accurate out of box. The OS works fine. I got useful shot at 1/8 secs. Most of art lens produce a bit over bright picture. This one seems fix the issue. It produce just right brightness and nice color.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I Can Not Recommend This Lens I own 5 Sigma Art lenses, and I pre ordered this one as soon as it was available. Unfortunately after receiving it I did not test it until the 30 return period had passed. Roger Cicala with Lens Rentals called this lens a single, not a home run. I have shot this on a D610, D750 and D500 with similar results on the 3 cameras. 24mm and 2.8 even the center is not acceptably sharp, 35mm is a little better, 50mm is where this lens is best, and 70mm is like 35. Focus accuracy is inconsistent, and I can only get acceptable results using AF-S Auto, not what you buy a 24-70 2.8 for. The lens is currently enroute to the service center at Ronkonkona to be checked out. In the future I will not pre order a Sigma Art lens but will wait instead until there are enough reviews on the lens to make a decision, or consider renting one to test out before purchasing it. My 5 other Sigma Arts will stay in my camera bag, this one will not.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very high quality, sharp lens. One caveat though... I first want to say the positive. It's a very, very high quality lens. Extremely sharp (more so than the Nikon 2.8 24-70 I sold). It focuses very fast, and photos have an almost prime look to them when shooting wide open. Optics really are superior. Only two minor issues. It is very heavy. Not a big deal, but be aware of this if you have to carry it around all day at a wedding. Also, Nikon users be aware, the barrel zoom is OPPOSITE of Nikon. I.E. you turn it counter-clockwise to zoom in, and clockwise to zoom wide. It's a learnable thing, but a pain in the butt if you're using other Nikon zooms with it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Focus disappointment I was disappointed. I don't own any other Sigma Art lenses, but when I was in the market for a 24-70 lens and heard they were coming out with this, I pre-ordered it and waited anxiously to receive it. Out of the box, it felt solid. It was heavier than I expected, but it actually helped keep it steady when taking shots. I ended up returning this and going with the new Tamron instead. I wasn't impressed with the focus. Perhaps I received a bad copy, but from the reviews of the other Art lenses on the tack sharp focus, this is what I was expecting. Focus was just too soft for what I expected and would want for the price I am paying. Opted to go for the Tamron, which was $100 cheaper and a 6 year warranty. Would give this actually about 2 1/2 stars. I know it's a zoom lens, but my expectations just weren't met, unfortunately.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Forced to return, useless (sadly) First, let me say that I was very excited about this lens when I first heard about it. The day is went up for preorder, I jumped on the internet and bought one, based solely on the positive reviews that Sigma's Art series of lenses has been getting. I have owned (still do, in fact) several older Sigma lenses, and they are ok, but definitely not professional quality, so I couldn't wait to see what all the fuss was about with Sigma's newer lenses. I somehow got my copy less than a week after preorder opened; the store I bought it from, to this day, still lists the lens as alternatively back-ordered or unavailable, so maybe I got the only copy they had. So, like a kid in a candy store, I ripped it out of the box and sat and stared in awe. Unfortunately, I then took a picture with it. A week later, heartbroken, I returned it - I waited over a month for a replacement, then gave up and cancelled the order entirely once I started seeing other people's reviews backing up my findings. I will try to explain.... First Impressions: This lens is a beauty, no doubt about it. Hands down, the most beautiful camera lens I have ever owned. It's big, it's heavy, its made of shiny metal, textured plastic, and soft rubber in all the right ways and places. When you put it on your camera, it really looks like you mean business. It's also packaged really well, in a very nice box (much nicer even then Nikon's hilariously expensive 24-70 VR), and comes with a very well made lens hood, caps, and soft case. Really, it's a testament to the attention Sigma is paying to design with their products. In operation, the awesomeness continues. It has weathersealing around the bayonet, so when it clicks firmly into place, it stays there. Other, cheaper, lenses wobble a bit (yes, even Nikons), but this guy feels like it becomes one with the camera. The zoom is solid and well-damped, and VERY quiet (none of that whispy sound you can sometimes get, like plastic rubbing on plastic). Likewise, the zoom ring turns easily with one finger but stays put when you leave it be. Autofocus is super quiet; maybe, in fact, the most silent focus I have ever used - even during video mode, all you really get from the in-camera mic is a soft whoosh-whoosh sound, really amazing. The switches are a little tough to operate, but this can be forgiven as they blend so seamlessly into the body that you can forget they are there. Shooting: I will put a disclaimer on the rest of this review: It is entirely possible that I got some sort of defective copy. In fact, I very much HOPE I got a defective copy. I will also add that I tried this lens on a D5100, a D7100, a D500, and a D800, so please don't assume it was my camera that was the problem. In fact, I noticed varying degrees of defectiveness based on which camera I used, the worst being on the D5100 and D800, the most tolerable on the D500. In short, your experience may vary, and that is a pretty big problem - when it comes to lenses in the $1300+ range, no one's experience should vary! These lenses should have the tightest tolerances and most demanding QC tests so that the professionals buying them can just hook them on their camera and go, not worrying about AF fine-tune and off-plane and decentered focusing. Anyway, here's the rest of the review... So, the first thing you might notice is that the lens is nice and bright. The next thing you may notice is that it doesn't seem to know how to focus. And I don't mean it hunts a little, or just misses every so often, or is even just a little soft. This lens misses focus EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. After being surprised and disappointed by the first batch of photos I took, I set up my focus chart and used the AF fine tune to try to get it right. On the D800, the worst of them all, I had it pegged at -20 (the highest adjustment possible) and it was still out of focus. The D500 was marginal at -15, but would randomly be out of focus every third or fouth shot. The D7100 actually did pretty well, requiring a -8, but the D5100 has no AF fine tune feature, and was therefore completely unusable with this lens (unless you are shooting exclusively in live-view or video). Once you get some focus, you may be alarmed to find it focuses pretty slowly, and not all confidently; this is particularly noticeable in low-light or backlight. For a wedding photographer, this is a major problem. I need lenses that focus as fast as I can push the shutter, and stay that way. Even in bright sunlight, this lens was unable to keep up with the constant AF of the D500 at 10 frames per second. I own a Sigma 50-150 from a few years ago that can do this with no problem, so why can't a brand new lens perform this trick? Image Quality: A few positives: Contrast and color rendition are superb, once focused. Skin tones are rendered perfectly, and bright colors don't seem to exhibit any shift or bloom. No chromatic aberration was visible, and this is BEFORE any kind of Lightroom lens calibration was available to automatically remove CA. Compared to the Nikon 24-70 VR, CA control is amazing on this lens. Bokeh is also quite good, better than any other mid-zoom I have used (and yes, better than Nikon's flagship, but just by a hair). More negatives: Once I got the focus thing more or less controlled, I took some more test shots and was astonished to find images that were sharp in the center were out of focus on the left side and right side! It is almost like the focal plane was at a slight angle to the sensor, so that the left side was back-focused while the right side was front-focused (and the center stayed true). It was the most evident on the D800, you maybe even be able to see it in the sample shot of the brick wall. It's not a pleasant blur, either, but more of a smear that renders those out of focus areas in a distracting way. And it was like this in every photo. Essentially, this one problem completely ruined the lens for me - it would be completely useless for anything besides photographs of small objects that fill less than 1/3 of the frame, held in the center of the frame - what photographer does that?? Landscapes are out of the question, as you need edge-to-edge sharpness for that to work, and this lens was incapable of doing that. To make matters worse, corner sharpness, even on crop-sensor DX bodies, is a complete joke (and is downright hilarious on the full-frame D800) - in fact, its so bad that you can see it even on 4x6 prints of images taken with the D800. It gives all your photos a strange, hipster-esque effect like they were taken with some cheap lens from the 60's. Final Verdict: I tried to get past these problems, thinking maybe, just maybe, if I stepped it down to F/8 it would fix everything! Nope. At some focal lengths, stepping down actually made the off-plane focus problem worse, and the entire field was useless around 50mm. OS on vs OS off didn't make any difference either. So, finally, after two weeks of working with it, I gave up and sent it back. I REALLY wanted to love this lens; I thought, in fact, that this would be the last 24-70 I would have to buy, so confident was I in Sigma's Art designation and their media releases regarding the quality and craftsmanship of this lens. At first, I just wanted an exchange - send me another, it will probably be better! After a month of waiting for a back-ordered replacement, however, I gave up and started looking for another solution.
